Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
