Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
